So you own a motorcycle and you want to hang out with other people who love their machines as much as you do. Well there is a little get together that happens every year in the first full week of August. And has been happening for the last 71 years. Last year a few guys and their bikes got together, and attendance was estimated around 475,000 give or take 25,000. This year The 72nd Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is happening August 6-12, 2012 in the black hills of South Dakota and it is going to be the best rally yet.
The Black Hills Classic rally was started by the “jackpine gypsies” biker club in August of 1938 and was the idea of Pappy Hoel. He had just purchased a Indian motorcycle dealership and had just formed the Gypsies in 1936. The Black Hills classic as it was originally called was a single race with nine riders and small but very vocal audience. Pappy still owns the tracks and area where the rally is held each year. The rally started out as just a small race and some stunts but soon grew to include hill climb events and 1/2 mile oval track races. In the 60’s they added daredevil events and motocross track racing. Then concerts and gun demonstrations and even cow tipping.
The rally has evolved into a social gathering for anything and everything motorcycle or trikes. just about anything that has wheels. For every kind of motorcycle there is every kind of person. The famous to notorious to just your average guy hanging out with his buds. You will see everything at Sturgis. It is something that needs to be seen to believed. If you go to one motorcycle rally in your life, make it Sturgis.
